Obesity in Pregnancy | Complications for the baby

Obesity in Pregnancy

While obesity is always a problem for the health of the sufferer, if an obese woman becomes pregnant, this problem becomes a risk factor for both mother and baby.

First, obesity may represent a complication in pregnancy, as excess weight causes many hormonal imbalances that can markedly decrease the likelihood of becoming pregnant.

Second, if obesity despite a woman becomes pregnant, the pregnancy is high risk.

Possible complications during pregnancy when women are obese:

     * Risk of gestational diabetes, which is a type of diabetes that occurs when you are pregnant.
     * Fluid retention and swelling.
     * Increased blood pressure.
     * Difficulties in childbirth.
     * Risk of infection after delivery.

Complications for the baby

     * Increased likelihood of obesity
     * Risk of diabetes.
     * Risk of macrosoma, ie that the baby can be very large and weigh more than normal.
